Your Build Isn't Automatically Insured
Here's a fact that surprises a lot of riders after the fact: your standard UTV policy is priced and paid out based on the machine's stock, factory value. Everything you've added on top — and most riders add plenty — typically needs to be scheduled separately to actually be covered. If it isn't, a total loss pays for the machine that rolled off the factory floor, not the one you actually built.
We see the same handful of upgrades missed from policies over and over. Here are five of the most common — and most expensive to discover uninsured.
1. The Roll Cage
An aftermarket roll cage is often the single biggest upgrade cost on a built RZR, and it's also one of the most likely to need replacement after exactly the kind of accident that would otherwise total your machine. If it's not scheduled, you're paying full replacement cost out of pocket on the one part that was protecting you.
2. Winches & Recovery Hardware
A mounted winch, bumper, and rock sliders add real cost and real capability — and they're routinely overlooked because riders think of them as "trail gear" rather than insured equipment. If a winch is stolen off a parked machine or damaged in a wreck, standard coverage likely won't touch it unless it's on your schedule.
3. Light Bars & Auxiliary Lighting
Lighting upgrades are one of the most popular UTV modifications and one of the easiest to forget insuring — they feel more like an accessory purchase than a "vehicle upgrade." A quality light bar setup can run into real money, and it's exactly the kind of add-on that gets left off a schedule simply because nobody thought to mention it.
4. Suspension & Performance Upgrades
Long-travel suspension, upgraded shocks, and turbo or performance kits meaningfully raise your machine's real value — and its real repair or replacement cost. These are also some of the priciest single upgrades riders make, which makes them some of the most painful to eat the cost of unexpectedly.
5. Custom Wheels, Tires & Graphics
Aftermarket wheel and tire packages beyond factory spec, plus custom wraps or paint work, add up fast and are almost never accounted for in a stock valuation. They're cosmetic and performance upgrades at once, and both matter if the machine is ever a total loss.
How to Fix This in About Five Minutes
Scheduling your accessories isn't complicated. Give us a rundown of what you've added and roughly what each item cost — receipts help but aren't required — and we'll get it added to your policy, usually the same day. From there, it's just a matter of keeping the list current: every time you add something significant, a quick call or email keeps your coverage matched to your actual build.
Beyond the Top 5: Other Commonly Missed Upgrades
The five above are the most expensive and most common misses, but they're far from the only accessories worth double-checking. Sound systems and amplifiers built for off-road use, aftermarket bumpers and skid plates, upgraded exhaust systems, cab enclosures and doors, and even higher-end GPS/navigation units can all add up to real money that a stock valuation won't account for. If you've spent money on it and it bolted onto (or into) your machine, it's worth asking whether it needs to be on your schedule — the cost of asking is a five-minute conversation; the cost of not asking is finding out during a claim.
Why Riders Skip This Step
It's rarely a decision — it's an oversight. Most riders buy a base policy when they first get the machine, then add upgrades gradually over months or years without ever circling back to their insurance. Each individual addition feels too small to bother updating a policy over, until the total value sitting unscheduled is thousands of dollars. The fix isn't complicated, it's just easy to forget: treat a policy review as part of any significant upgrade, the same way you'd budget for the part itself.
Don't Wait Until After a Claim to Find Out
The worst time to learn your roll cage or winch wasn't covered is in the middle of a claim, when there's nothing left to do about it. If it's been a while since you reviewed what's scheduled on your policy — or you've never scheduled anything at all — it's worth a five-minute check now.
